Prevocational general practice program
General practice placements for interns have been available for the past three decades in the United Kingdom, with literature unanimously promoting the educational benefits. Prevocational GP placements have the potential to alleviate some of the pressure of sourcing additional postgraduate placements for junior doctors.
Despite available qualitative data, there is currently no published information that adequately describes the range and volume of patient and procedural experiences in PGPPP placements. In response, a prospective study of caseload data is currently underway to better inform medical students, prospective PGPPP doctors, GP supervisors and specialist training colleges of the potential value of such placements.
The practice was staffed by seven GPs and two practice nurses. Two GPs alternated as clinical supervisors and a third GP, separate from the practice, conducted informal weekly tutorials and reviewed patient encounter and procedure logs.
Presentations during a single day included complex medical or surgical issues, paediatrics, obstetrics, gynaecology, dermatology, mental health, occupational health, preventative health and more. Patients often attended follow up appointments during this term. The continuity of patient care in PGPPP was in stark contrast to acute medicine and surgery in tertiary hospitals. Call Now. All right reserved. Teaching during the term includes formal structured and informal teaching. This ranges from weekly one-on-one teaching with a supervisor, to on-the-job supervision, and opportunities to participate in ongoing GP professional development activities. It gave me a different perspective on medicine compared to hospital based medicine. Here, we are the primary health care givers and developing a rapport with patients as well as following up with them was just as important as diagnosing and treating their condition.
